Ah, Japan. The land of sushi, Mount Fuji, anime, and a culture rich with history and tradition. While these are the images that come to mind for most, it’s hard to ignore the quirky personality that this innovative country harbors alongside its solemnness and beauty – something that has found a nice little niche for itself within the realm of VR apps. We’ve highlighted six of the most offbeat virtual reality apps from the land of the rising sun for your amusement (or bewilderment), so let’s get started!
Nagomi’s Earcleaning VR
Ever wanted to have your ears cleaned out by your virtual anime cousin? Neither have we, but now there’s an opportunity to lie back and relax as she prods you with an ear cleaning stick and whispers in your ear. As weird as this sounds, the app has surprisingly been a hit on the Play Store with over 100,000 downloads – guess who’s having the last chuckle now?
VR Transgender Project!
If you’re a guy and have always wanted to know what it would be like to look down and have gigantic boobs, ‘VR Transgender Project!’ is for you! This app has the virtual you standing in front of a full-length mirror, whereupon you can switch between different outfits – such as a sultry schoolgirl or a bodacious bunny – and admire yourself for as long as you see fit. Bonus points go to the app’s comment section, where for one user, this app has started a love for wearing thigh high fishnets.
On Her Lap
You may have seen images floating around the interwebs of a pillow in the shape of a woman’s lap – or of the cafés in Tokyo that allow you to take a nap on a young lady’s thighs – but now you can fulfill your lap napping fantasy whenever you like! Lie down on top of a wide-eyed anime character against the backdrop of a beautiful villa… and that’s all. What’s not to love?
A girlfriend in your pocket? We’re keen! But just like any flesh and blood female if you look at the parts of her she doesn’t want you to, she will get mighty peeved and her tension meter will go up. When this happens, the screen clouds up and you can’t see her “cuteness” – oh no! Make her happy by looking from her preferred angles, and unlock different costumes for her to don.
Unity-chan VR Durovis Dive
This one is a little less offbeat, and a little more puzzling. Watch on as the official mascot for the Unity game engine (you may remember her from ‘On Her Lap’ above) performs a bunch of animations – from waving enthusiastically to jumping alarmingly high – in a dark and slightly creepy room. And that’s about it. Great for fans of this character, but not so much for anybody else.
SRM Fitness VR – Training with Shoko
Ever needed an extra kick of motivation in order to get off the couch and get moving? Your green haired, virtual gal pal Shoko is here to cheer you on by becoming your personal trainer. Choose between sit-ups, push-ups, back extensions, and squats and get ready to work up a sweat alongside the character from the popular mahjong game ‘Super Real Mahjong’ in various costumes.
As VR picks up traction, so too will the localizations of offbeat VR apps from the inventive minds of Japanese game studios. Japan – don’t change. We’re looking forward to seeing what other crazy stuff you’re going to come up with next!
